Patriarchy is defined by a male oriented social norm – which largely leaves women out. It speaks of male dominance in all aspects of life.
We need to understand what Patriarchy is and confront it. This norm not only de-humanizes men but ensures that they suffer as much as the women in this web.
A piece I wrote on 11th Nov 2016 :
While we split hairs about why Modi changed the money denominations – both pro and anti parties and most importantly the harassed parties….and some remnant hair splitting about “OMG why Trump” vs “Thank god not Hillary”….some news and truths we have missed:
1. A woman in MP paraded naked by her husband for having eloped with her beau. How in GOD’s name has it become so natural to outrage the modesty of a woman to “teach her a lesson”? Simply walk out of the marriage – do not torture her!
She is human! And YOU the perpetrators of crime are not judge and jury! (On last count they have been arrested )
My issue is.more fundamental – this type of behavior has to be prevented! We have to stop making criminals out of supposedly normal men and full village communities – we have to teach them to respect women as humans)
2. A minor was raped. Her attackers arrested then let off on bail . They started harassing her and her family to take back her case. She then committed suicide to protect her family!
Wow and OMG – why did we as a society allow this to happen? First she is attacked , her body violated. But her spirits not broken she decided to fight. BUT then our system failed her – when in open daylight and in full public view she and family were harassed and threatened.
Brilliant – what the rapists could not do – ie break her spirit in the 1st go…. they managed with the help and protection of the whole society to break her spirit!
When her spirit broke – she killed herself? So isn’t society and the administration to blame for this new crime???
A heartfelt request to all reading this …. wake up…
Join me in spreading awareness and help empowering women around each of us. And most importantly educating society around us.
We need to do this! We need to prevent such gruesome crimes!
We all need to UNDERSTAND the signs of blatant and subtle Patriarchy and confront it! Thats the ONLY way that we shall be able to bring any change!
As a nation we do NOT call out Gender Based Violent Crimes as the direct resultant of blatant Patriarchy. We simply do not use the right words!
Yes its crime against women – BUT who are the perpetrators? If they are men – then this shall be deemed as Gender Based Violence!
